The 2024 WNBA Draft, held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on Monday, April 15, proved to be a landmark event, highlighting the progress and popularity of women’s basketball. Excitement filled the air as fans and teams gathered to witness the introduction of future stars into the league.
The New York Liberty had a particularly fruitful night, making several key acquisitions that promise to enhance their roster. With their 11th pick, the Liberty selected Marquesha “Que” Davis, a 6-foot guard from Ole Miss. Known for her quiet demeanor off the court, Davis lets her performance speak volumes, boasting skills that Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb describes as perfectly suited for the professional level.
Following up at the 17th pick, the Liberty secured Esmery Martinez, a 6’2″ forward from the University of Arizona. Martinez, originally from the Dominican Republic, brings impressive agility and scoring prowess that will undoubtedly strengthen the team’s frontcourt.
The 23rd pick brought Jessika Carter, a 6’5” center from Mississippi State, into the fold. Carter’s presence in the paint and her defensive acumen are expected to be major assets for the Liberty.
Completing their draft picks, the Liberty chose Kaitlyn Davis, a versatile 6’2″ forward from USC, with their 35th pick. Her dynamic playmaking and defensive skills are anticipated to make her a valuable player for future seasons. “By securing Kaitlyn’s draft rights, she will have the opportunity to continue to develop and compete for a spot on the Liberty as soon as the 2025 season. Her athleticism in the frontcourt, dynamic playmaking ability, and rim protection make her an exciting future prospect,” said Kolb
GM Kolb and Coach Sandy Brondello expressed their satisfaction with the draft results, confident in the abilities of their new players to mesh well with the team’s existing dynamics and contribute to the style of play that New York fans adore.
The 2024 WNBA Draft not only showcased the growing talent in women’s basketball but also set the stage for an exciting future for the Liberty and their newest players. As the summer season approaches, anticipation builds to see these rookies shine on the court.
